Interior design styles
Not sure what to call the look you want? Here are eleven popular styles, each shown in a living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.
Knowing the name of a style makes it much easier to explain what you like, and it gives our designers a head start. Have a look through, and tell us the one closest to what you have in mind when you start your design brief. Mixing two is fine too.
These are example images created to show what each style looks like. They are not photographs of our completed projects.
Minimalist
Minimalist is about keeping only what you need. Clean straight lines, plain surfaces and a calm palette of whites, greys and black, with nothing on show that does not earn its place.
Industrial
Industrial takes its look from old warehouses and lofts. Exposed brick, concrete, black metal and weathered wood, in greys, blacks and browns.
Bohemian
Bohemian is relaxed and personal. A colourful mix of patterns, rugs, cushions and plants, with furniture from different places and eras that looks collected over time.
Modern
Modern is simple and uncluttered. Clean lines, flat surfaces and a restrained palette, often black, white and grey, with materials like metal and glass.
Mediterranean
Mediterranean is inspired by homes around the sea in southern Europe. Sandy, earthy and sea-blue colours, stone, terracotta and ceramics, linen and soft rounded shapes, so it feels bright and relaxed.
Japandi
Japandi is a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design. Calm and uncluttered, with low simple furniture, light wood, natural fibres and ceramics in earthy neutral tones.
Contemporary
Contemporary means what is in fashion right now, so it changes over time. At the moment that is mostly soft neutral colours, clean lines, good quality materials and flexible furniture.
Rustic
Rustic has a warm, country feel. Chunky natural wood, stone and iron, earthy colours and sturdy furniture that looks handmade and lived in.
Classic
Classic is traditional and elegant. Balanced, symmetrical rooms, detailed furniture, rich fabrics and warm colours, often with touches of gold.
Mid-Century
Mid-century is the look of the 1950s and 60s. Warm wood furniture on slim tapered legs, clean simple shapes, and pops of mustard, olive green and orange.
